Woodlands – 185 acres in Northeast Iowa
We are owners of 185 acres of bluffland timber in northeast Iowa (near Lansing). We purchased the property in 1999, but it has been in the family since 1966. Red oak is the dominant species, with quality black walnut, sugar maple, white ash, and basswood in a natural hardwood forest. Management goals include quality timber (4 sales from 1999-2009), recreation (hiking trails, deer hunting, morel harvesting), and legacy for our two children. Currently dealing with invasive plants (garlic mustard, honeysuckle, and Japanese knotweed), while emerald ash borer and gypsy moth are at our doorstep.
Dennis is the Protection Committee Chair for the Walnut Council, and has been a forest entomologist with the US Forest Service in St. Paul, MN since 1993. He has a BS and PhD in forestry and entomology from Iowa State University. Linda is a forest pathologist, also with the US Forest Service. She has a BS in forestry from Iowa State University and a MS in forest pathology from Clemson University.
