The Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center recently conducted a study of evaluating Northern Red Oak acorn desiccation damage using x-ray imaging. The x-rays show detection of shrinkage of the cotyledons and separation from the pericarp. Damage detected using these images were well correlated with seed germination rates and seedling vigor. As the center continues to improve efficiency of nursery production and pursue direct seeding options in the field, this imaging may have great implications in the future as a means to quickly detect and discard damaged seed for oak, walnut and other large-seeded hardwoods.
